The Advanced Seminars will meet on the following dates:
March 16-18, 2012 Dr. Ron Bell will be presenting his strategies for “Age-Appropriate” Orthodontic Treatment in growing patients. Dr. Bell is Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at the Medical University of South Carolina. He received his D.D.S. (1973) and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry (1978) from Louisiana State University and certificate in orthodontics from the Medical College of Georgia (1987). A Diplomate and past Director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Bell currently serves as the program director of the Postgraduate Program in Orthodontics at MUSC. He previously served as Chair of the combined Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Department at MUSC (1990-2004) and program director of the Postgraduate Program in Pediatric Dentistry (1990 – 2006). In addition to his academic activities, Dr. Bell maintains a private practice in orthodontics with an emphasis toward children and adolescents. He is also the orthodontic consultant / provider to the Craniofacial Anomalies Team of MUSC Children’s Hospital.
The objective of orthodontic management of the developing occlusion is a stable facial, skeletal, and dental balance consistent with functional and esthetic harmony. Dr. Bell allows for “age-appropriate” consideration of the following treatment strategies to best achieve overall orthodontic treatment objectives:
Control arch length adjustments through supervision of E-space using guidance of eruption and space supervision concepts
Space gaining through arch development and transverse expansion procedures
Vertical control of eruption patterns for adjustments in overbite, openbite, and occlusal planes
Growth modification using dentofacial orthopedic techniques when skeletal Class II and Class III discrepancies are identified
Control of deleterious habits and function to enhance neuromuscular balance
The strategies for arch development and dentofacial orthopedics are accomplished through coordinated use of priority appliances (i.e. common or more routine usage) with supplemental techniques (i.e. special or less common usage). A multifaceted armamentarium provides the clinician with varied design features and treatment protocols that are necessary to meet the demands presented by different malocclusion and patient factors, including cooperation.
